Telehealth & Telephone Consults (updated 16.8.2020)

Given the current COVID-19 situation in Tasmania, the General Practitioners, Physiotherapist and Nurse Practitioner at GHFP are providing Phone Consults and Telehealth (video) Consults as an alternative to in-surgery appointments.

Medicare Rebates for Telehealth Consultations:

On 14th March 2020 new Medicare item numbers were announced which allowed us to bulk bill Telephone and Telehealth Consults to our existing patients. Initially these item numbers could only be used for particular groups of patients and practitioners. On 30th March 2020 the items were expanded for access by all Australians without restriction. On 6th April 2020 the legistlative requirements changed again:

  • Telehealth and Phone medicare item numbers must be bulk billed for:
    1. Commonwealth concession card holders,
    2. children under 16 years old and
    3. patients who are more vulnerable to COVID-19:
      • People required to self-isolate or self-quarantine in accordance with guidance issued by the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee in relation to COVID-19.
      • People aged 70 and over.
      • People who identify as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent who are at least 50 years old.
      • Pregnant people.
      • People being treated for a chronic health condition.
      • People who are immunocompromised.
      • People who meet the current national triage protocol criteria for suspected COVID-19 infection.
  • Patients who do not fit these medicare criteria may be privately billed at GHFP (normal consultation fees and Medicare rebates apply).

Wherever possible we will continue to provide in-surgery appointments. But if you're unwell, please stay at home and use the phone.

How to book a Telehealth or Phone Consult:

Telehealth and Telephone Consults can be arranged by phoning the practice on 6169 0000. Our Receptionists can arrange the following services via telehealth or phone:

Standard 15 minute Telehealth and Phone Consults can be booked online (from this website or from the Appointuit App).

Telehealth (video) Consults:

Our practitioners prefer to use Telehealth (video) rather than Phone Consults wherever possible because it's helpful to be able to see you. Once you've booked your Telehealth Consult a Receptionist will send you a link to the Telehealth Consult via email or SMS. Please join the meeting at the time of your appointment and wait for the practitioner to start the consultation. It’s possible that the practitioner may be running behind time, we appreciate your patience and understanding.

Our Physiotherapist, Jane Wilkinson, and our Exercise Physiologist, Liz Schultz, are using Physiapp for telehealth consultations. Physiapp allows the practitioner to video call you and show you exercises whilst screen sharing. They can then tailor a program specific to your condition and upload it to an app on your phone.

Phone Consults:

The practitioner will phone you to start the consultation. Please be ready to answer their call. It’s possible that the practitioner may be running behind, we appreciate your patience and understanding.
